What does therapy look like?
Generally, the therapeutic process involves a bio-psycho-social diagnostic assessment for the first session to learn about the client and to develop and create treatment goals. Following the assessment, routine sessions are scheduled to work on the established treatment goals. The therapeutic process can look different for many clients. Progress can occur rapidly and for others, it can take awhile. It all depends on where the client currently is in their journey. I always say it is important to go into therapy understanding it may be more of a marathon than a sprint. While a lot of positive work occurs during appointments, a lot of progress is made outside of the appointment. It is important for clients to use the tools and resources therapists provide them outside of the therapy appointment.
How long does the therapeutic process last?
It can depend on treatment goals. For some clients, treatment may take 10-12 sessions and for others, the process can last years. Some clients may choose to do quarterly appointments once they are doing well as a form of maintenance. The therapeutic process is different for each client.
Do I have to attend weekly appointments?
It is recommended that you start with weekly appointments for at least one month to begin building a therapeutic relationship and rapport with your therapist. The first 5-6 appointments are still considered part of the assessment process. As progress is made, the frequency of appointments can be reduced.
How long are appointments?
Appointments typically last anywhere from 53 to 60 minutes. The therapist understands that sudden events in life can happen and occassionally appointments may need to be cut short. Communicate with your therapist at the beginning of the session when this happens so they are aware and they can end the session at the time needed.
What if my insurance does not cover teletherapy or mental health services?
Clients are responsible for knowing the coverage their health insurance provides. It is strongly encouraged and recommended to find out coverage information before scheduling an appointment. If services are denied by an insurance company, clients will be responsible to pay for the services rendered and denied by insurance at the self-pay rate.
